Feastday: September 9th St Peter Claver Church, Tampa - named for a saint who opposed slavery and ministered to Black slaves can trace its beginnings back to 1893. First established by the Sisters of the Holy Names, the elementary school began classes on February 2, 1894 for sixteen African American students. Battling through a history of racially-motivated opposition, the first church building was finally erected in 1915. Read more
